.22 Caliber

Adapted from the U.S. Marine Corps Pistol Team (Modified) Program Workbook, Chapter 1 (.22 Caliber). Same drill mechanics as the .45 Service Pistol plan — distances, cadences, and group-size standards are identical across calibers in this program. Only the final test/aggregate score benchmarks differ. Print the phase checklist for a quick check-off sheet, the detailed range log for full shooter’s notes per stage, or the target masters — L-8, L-9, Large Training Target, Small Training Target — extracted verbatim from the source workbook so ring diameters print at correct scale.

Principles

  • Perfect practice makes perfect — sloppy reps groove sloppy habits.
  • Most early drills fire on blank or plain-black training targets, forcing focus onto sight alignment and trigger control rather than score.
  • Two-thirds of pistol shooting happens at 25 yards — master it before spending real time at 50-yard slow fire.
  • .22 is traditionally the easiest gun of the three (lightest recoil) — a good warm-up each range session even after progressing on the .45.

Mental program template

Same as the .45 plan — write your own mental checklist and run it before every string:

  1. Visualize a perfect run of the upcoming stage.
  2. Load, verify natural point of aim.
  3. Restate the stage to yourself (e.g. “rapid fire”).
  4. Start your breathing cycle.
  5. Raise the gun — image of perfect sight alignment, continue breathing cycle.
  6. Let the gun/body settle — image of a centered shot group.
  7. Start trigger pressure, focus on the sights, be patient.
  8. Let the first shot break, recover, continue the string.

The five phases

Phase 1 — Fundamentals

Zero, group shooting, and the basic marksmanship test at 25 yards.

Phase 2 — Timed Fire

5 rounds in 20 seconds, at 25 yards, building to a scored match test.

Phase 3 — Rapid Fire

5 rounds in 10 seconds, at 25 yards, building to a scored match test.

Phase 4 — Slow Fire (50 yd)

10 rounds, 10 minutes, at 50 yards — extending the fundamentals to distance.

Phase 5 — 900 Aggregate

The full match: slow, timed, and rapid fire, scored, under match conditions.
